  7. Serve salmon drizzled with Sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds and chives/shallots, if desired.

What The Hell Is Hip Dip?

The indentation which we call hip dents actually is known as the ‘trochanteric depression’ in anatomical terminology.

If you have very visible violin hips, you’re not a freak, and it’s not a deformity, it can mean there is a bit of a dip between your hip bones and where your thigh bone (femur) starts.
In many cases, if you have muffin top bottom which is commonly also known as the love handles, your dip hip is likely to show than those with medium dipped hips.

If something goes wrong, the lives of both mother and baby are at risk.

Here’s How To Turn Ordinary Condiments Into Extra Ordinary Dinner Table Favorites

My love for food and being adventurous with taste buds has never weaned when it comes to bringing the awesomeness to the dinner table. If you find your meal times a constant fight with your little ones or a bit stale, maybe it’s time to bring in the big guns to dinner.

We probably all have the same bottles in our pantry and fridge, those multi-colored, familiar products we have known since childhood.

There’s the red squeeze bottle of ketchup, the yellow squeeze bottle of mustard, the jar of generic barbecue sauce, the tub of sour cream and the big bottle of white mayonnaise.

Even if our tastes in food have changed dramatically since our youth, chances are good we are still using the same condiments or organic, vegan versions of them.
Isn’t it a travesty that we will spend so much time and effort making a variety of veggie burgers only to put the same old ketchup, mustard or mayo on them.
Why go through all the trouble to perfect a best veggie burger recipe and yet not put that same effort and creativity into creating even better just give a twist to our condiments readily available in the pantry as well?

Call me a rebel for everything normal, but I despise routine. Unfortunately, kids, especially over five-year-olds to teens all hate dull and boring dinner routines too. So if you are struggling with making them love your vegan menu, take a new look at what you can do to make them fall in love again with everything you cook.

There is no reason we have to stick with the plain, boring versions of the past.
You wouldn’t serve pasta with the same plain tomato sauce every single time, so why serve your burgers and fries with the same old ketchup?
And if you buy condiments or make your own, why not turn those familiar flavors into eye-opening, exotic ones by simply tweaking or mixing in a few ingredients to make it palatable to your vegan beet toasted batties?

If you are wondering, even possibly contemplating to give a try, here are a few ideas you can borrow and make them your very own:

1. Ketchup

You can take any prepared ketchup, whether bottled or homemade and easily turn it into a flavor-packed specialty condiment. The next time you are thinking about ketchup for your veggie burgers or fries, try one of these zesty versions.

Love Chinese Flovors?

To give your ketchup a Chinese flavor, add 2 teaspoons of Chinese 5-spice powder, 1 Tbs. soy sauce, the juice of a lime and a pinch of black pepper to one cup of ketchup. This would be perfect on Hoisin Black Bean Burgers.

Add some bold Mexican flavors to one cup of ketchup by adding 1 teaspoon each of ground cumin, ground coriander and chili powder, the juice of a lime and a tablespoon of chopped fresh cilantro. Cumin is a wonderful complement to beets so this would be great on my Roasted Beet Burgers.

Crispy fries taste great with creamy curry-flavored ketchup. Just add 1 Tbs. curry powder and ¼ cup non-dairy yogurt to one cup of ketchup. This is a delicious dip for almost anything…maybe Walnut-Crusted Artichoke Hearts? Yum!

To make spicy Jerk ketchup, add 2 Tbs. jerk seasoning, the juice of a lime and 1 Tbs. pineapple juice to one cup of ketchup. If you want chunkier ketchup, use chopped fresh pineapple instead of the juice. Try this ketchup to spice up this Quinoa and White Bean Burger.

My favorite way to jazz up ketchup is by adding 2 tsp. of smoked paprika and 1 Tbs. of vegan Worcestershire sauce. It tastes rich and smoky. Balsamic vinegar can be used in place of the Worcestershire sauce if necessary. This is going directly onto my Kidney Bean-Walnut Burgers.

2. Mustard

Dijon mustard is delicious. It’s my choice of condiment for vegan hot dogs, sausages, and many sandwiches. Adding other flavors to mustard changes it into something everyone will swear you picked up in some expensive specialty store.

For an amazing mustard, you can use as a salad dressing, combine ½ cup Dijon mustard, 2 or 3 Tbs. white wine vinegar (to taste), a pinch of curry powder and 1 Tbs. fresh chopped cilantro. Try this on your next summer salad.

If you loved the taste of honey mustard, make a vegan version by mixing ¼ cup each Dijon mustard and agave nectar, 1 Tbs. apple cider vinegar and a pinch of salt. This is perfect for salads or as a dip for Crispy Tofu Nuggets.

Adding 1 tsp. of diced jalapenos and the zest and juice of a lime to ½ cup of Dijon mustard gives you a spicy sauce that’s perfect for tacos or tempeh “fish” fillets.

My favorite mustard mash-up happens by stirring 1 Tbs. prepared horseradish, 1 Tbs. of chopped fresh dill and 1 Tbs. of vegan mayo or sour cream into ½ cup Dijon mustard. I use versions of this horseradish-dill combo on my Eggplant Crunchburgers and my homemade Tempeh “Crab” Cakes.

3. Mayo

Though I hated it as a child, vegan mayo is my favorite condiment of all. I can dip just about anything into mayo. When you make ordinary mayo, it’s a fancy aioli. Since mayo itself is bland, it’s a perfect blank canvas for so many flavors. I’ll try to select just a few to highlight here.

You can buy Sriracha-flavored mayo in the store or you can make it yourself. Just mix ½ cup mayo with ¼ cup Sriracha. If you want to sweeten it up a bit for balance, add a touch of agave or some sweet pickle relish. This would be perfect on this Vegan Humdinger Sandwich that has mostly mild flavors from the cucumber, avocado and alfalfa sprouts.

For a beautiful spring green condiment, make Chimichurri Mayo by adding fresh herbs to mayo. Puree ½ cup of your favorite herbs such as parsley, cilantro, thyme or basil with one garlic clove and a cup of mayo. Add salt and pepper to taste. Spread some on this Tempeh Tomato Herb Sandwich for an amazing meal.

For an Asian twist, mix 2 Tbs. white miso with 1 cup of mayo. Add 1 Tbs. grated ginger, 2 tsps. agave nectar, and a dash of toasted sesame oil. This would be an amazing dipping sauce for some Daikon Fries.

I make the creamiest red pepper aioli by mixing ½ cup vegan mayo, ½ vegan sour cream, ½ cup roasted red peppers, 2 tsp. dried basil, salt, and pepper in a food processor. It’s not only delicious, it’s really pretty. It’s the perfect topping for my Fried Green Tomatoes.

4. BBQ Sauce

I love making my own BBQ sauces and I’ve shared some recipes for them in my article, “10 Ways to Make Awesome BBQ Sauces, Rubs, and Marinades.” But if you have a bottle of store-bought BBQ sauce sitting around, you can easily doctor it up and turn it into something special for any of your barbeque dishes.

For a Cajun BBQ sauce, combine 1 cup barbecue sauce, ¼ cup bourbon and 2 tsp. Cajun seasoning in a saucepan. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Serve with these Cajun Burgers for a hot and spicy dinner.

Get a taste of Hawaii by mixing 1 cup barbecue sauce with ½ cup fresh diced pineapple, ¼ cup pineapple juice and 1-2 Tbs. brown sugar, depending on how sweet you want it. Where would I put this? Oh, on any skewered dishes or on an incredible jackfruit sandwich.

Turn your seitan or tempeh ribs into a Japanese feast by slathering them with a teriyaki barbecue sauce. Simply mix 2 Tbs. molasses and 2 Tbs. tamari or soy sauce with 1 cup of barbecue sauce. Season with 1 tsp. each minced garlic and grated fresh ginger.

If you have a bottle of hoisin sauce or Chinese barbecue sauce sitting around, make it special. Add 3 Tbs. plum vinegar, 2 Tbs. mirin or Chinese rice wine, 2 Tbs. tamari or soy sauce and 3 Tbs. agave nectar to ¼ cup of hoisin sauce. Mix well and garnish with scallion greens. Use this as a dipping sauce for my Chinese 5-Spice Potato Latkes or Veggie Dumplings.

5. Sour Cream

The vegan sour cream is another blank canvas just begging to be painted on. I make my own Coconut Sour Cream but I love adding other flavors to it. Any of the recipes for mayo would work with sour cream but here are a few more ideas.

In a food processor, puree 1 avocado with ½ cup vegan sour cream, ¼ cup chopped green chiles, the juice of one lime and one garlic clove. Season with salt and pepper to taste. This is like having your sour cream and guacamole in one condiment; perfect for serving with quesadillas or nachos.

Add the juice of a lime and 2 Tbs. of chopped fresh cilantro to ½ cup of sour cream. This will taste refreshing on any Latin dish, especially tacos.

I often use vegan sour cream to make Tzatziki sauce. To one cup of sour cream, I add ½ large chopped cucumber, one clove of minced or grated garlic, the juice of half a lemon, a bit of olive oil and 1-2 tsp. of chopped dill. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Tzatziki sauce is the condiment of choice for falafel and chickpea burgers.

For a spicy kick, take one cup of sour cream and add in ½ of a chipotle pepper that has been seeded and finely minced. Stir in ½ tsp. of adobo sauce, 1 tsp. of agave nectar and the zest and juice of a lime. The chipotle sour cream is perfect on baked potatoes, in black bean soup or with my Spanish Potato Latkes.

As you can see, when you know the basics of different ethnic flavor profiles and spice combinations, you can incorporate them into basic condiments to make amazing toppings, dips, and sauces. With these recipes, no one will ever ask you to “hold the mayo” again. I bet you to try it!

1. All-Purpose Spice Rub

For a basic spice rub, you can use on seitan, tofu, or vegetables, try this combination that is similar to the famous Chicago steak spice blend. After rubbing on the mix, let the food stand about 15 minutes before cooking. For about 1/3 cup of rub, combine 2 Tbs. dry mustard, 2 Tbs. garlic powder, 1 Tbs. black pepper, 2 tsp. smoked paprika, 2 tsp. kosher salt, 1 tsp. dried thyme and 1 tsp. cayenne pepper.

2. Sweet and Spicy Rub

This rub has a little more heat in it from the chile powder, but it’s not too spicy. It’s best used when you need a bolder flavor — for instance on seitan or BBQ dishes. Combine ¼ cup chile powder, 2 Tbs. paprika, 1 Tbs. dried oregano, 1 Tbs. ground cumin, 1 Tbs. dried coriander, 1 Tbs. dry mustard, 2 Tbs. brown sugar, 2 tsp. kosher salt and 1 tsp. black pepper to make about ¾ cup of spice blend. Let the rub sit on the food for 15 minutes before cooking.

3. Indian Curry Rub

The curry, cumin, coriander, mint, turmeric, and ginger in this rub make a bold and delicious spice blend for tofu, tempeh or vegetables, especially potatoes. To make about ½ cup of Indian Curry Rub, combine 3 Tbs. curry powder, 1 Tbs. kosher salt, 2 tsp. crushed red pepper, 2 tsp. ground cumin, 2 tsp. ground coriander, 1 tsp. dried mint, 1 tsp. turmeric and 1 tsp. ground ginger. Let the rub sit on the food for 15 minutes before cooking.

4. Jerk Marinade

This is the marinade I use when I made Jerk “Chicken” with tofu or other vegan meats. This recipe makes enough marinade to serve 4. Combine ¼ cup tamari, ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup fresh lime juice, 2 Tbs. vegan Worcestershire sauce, 2 tsp. hot sauce, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 minced chile pepper, 1-inch grated fresh ginger, 3 Tbs. brown sugar, 2 tsp. ground allspice, 2 tsp. dried thyme, 1 tsp. kosher salt, 1 tsp. onion powder, 1 tsp. ground cinnamon, ½ tsp. ground nutmeg, ½ tsp. cayenne pepper and ¼ tsp. ground cloves. Mix the ingredients well and let the tofu or vegetables marinate for at least 15-20 minutes before cooking.

5. Spicy Balsamic Marinade

When I make tofu veggie kabobs, this is my go-to marinade. It’s rich from the balsamic vinegar and just a little spicy. This recipe makes enough marinade for one block of tofu and enough vegetables to make 8 kabobs. In a bowl, combine ¼ cup low-sodium vegetable broth, 2 Tbs. balsamic vinegar, 2 Tbs. tamari, 1 Tbs. vegetable oil, 1 tsp. kosher salt, 1 tsp. dried basil, 1 tsp. dried oregano, 1 tsp. dried thyme, 1 tsp. paprika, ½ tsp. ground black pepper, ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes and 2 minced garlic cloves. Marinate the tofu in the mixture for at least 30 minutes. Reserve a bit of the marinade and in another bowl, marinate the veggies for no longer than 10 minutes.

6. Pineapple Island Marinade

These Island Tofu Kabobs have tofu, seitan, and vegetables marinated in a sweet and spicy blend of orange juice, garlic, and ginger. I add pineapple to the veggies on the skewer for an added tangy tropical flavor. When the pineapple is grilled, it becomes a whole new thing. So delicious! For 8 kabobs, combine ½ cup fresh orange juice, ¼ cup agave nectar, 1 Tbs. tamari, 1 Tbs. brown rice vinegar, 3 sliced scallions, 1 Tbs. freshly grated ginger and 3 minced garlic cloves. Place your tofu or seitan in one plastic storage bag or bowl and your vegetables in a second one. Add half the marinade into each of the storage bags or bowls. Make sure all of the ingredients are covered with marinade and place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before cooking.

7. Spanish Chile Marinade

This marinade is actually a thick paste that I use to cover tofu and onions in one of my favorite Spanish recipes. It’s really fast and easy to make and it adds bold flavors to anything you put it on. This recipe makes enough to easily cover one block of tofu. In a food processor, add ½ an onion that is chopped into large pieces. Add 4 cloves of garlic to the food processor along with 1 Tbs. chile powder, 1 tsp. ground cumin, 1 tsp. ground oregano, ½ tsp. kosher salt and ¼ tsp. ground cloves. Add 1/3 cup of water and process into a smooth paste. Place the tofu or whatever you are marinating in a shallow bowl or dish and pour the marinade over it. Use a pastry brush to make sure the food is evenly covered with the chile paste on both sides. Let marinate for 30 minutes before cooking.

8. Basic BBQ Sauce

The BBQ sauce is really easy to make. The basic recipe involves combining a tomato base, an acid, a sweetener, and spices. Knowing the basic formula lets you mix and match ingredients to create new and exciting BBQ sauces. You can adjust the amounts of the ingredients if you prefer your BBQ sauce more tomato-y, more vinegary, sweeter, or spicier. My basic BBQ Sauce recipe is a bit more sweet than spicy, and I add some orange juice for a bright fruity note. In a saucepan, combine 2 cups ketchup, 1 ¼ cup apple cider vinegar, ¾ cup maple syrup, the zest and juice of ½ orange, 3 minced garlic cloves and 1 tsp. black pepper. Stir and heat over medium heat until it comes to a bubble. Lower the heat and let simmer for 30 minutes until it thickens.

9. Spicy Balsamic BBQ Sauce

When I want a BBQ sauce that has a lot more kick and richer, deeper flavors, I go for West African Style, Nigerian food flavoring in particular have a huge influence on this one that gets extra heat from red onions and chiles. Using balsamic vinegar in addition to apple cider vinegar adds a rich, syrupy flavor that is just incredible. In a small saucepan, combine 1 ½ cups ketchup, 1 cup apple cider vinegar, ¾ cup balsamic vinegar, ¾ cup maple syrup, 2 Tbs. brown sugar, 1 minced red onion, 2 minced garlic cloves and 1 Serrano chile that has been seeded (if you want less heat) and minced. Stir and let simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes until the sauce thickens.

10. Chinese BBQ Sauce

For Asian barbecue dishes, you can quickly whip up this sauce, which is sweet, salty, thick, and tangy. Combine ½ cup hoisin sauce, ½ cup mirin or sherry, ½ cup ketchup, 2 Tbs. minced ginger, 2 Tbs. brown rice vinegar, 1 Tbs. agave nectar, 2 tsp. Sriracha (or more to your liking), 1 minced garlic clove and ¼ tsp. of five-spice powder. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat, and then reduce the heat to low and simmer until slightly thickened. It should take about 15 to 20 minutes. Stir the sauce occasionally.

When it comes to rubs, marinades, and sauces, these are just 10 of the infinite possibilities. Think about what flavor profiles you prefer and let your imagination run wild. Once you experience how much a rub, marinade, or sauce can boost the flavor of your dishes, you’ll love creating your own combinations and wowing everyone with your secret recipes.
